NUKEM's Jeff Faul Addresses NEI Seminar
NUKEM, Inc. President and CEO Jeff Faul was a featured speaker at the Nuclear Energy Institute’s nuclear fuel seminar held in Austin, Texas, on Oct. 19, 2009. At the well-attended conference, Mr. Faul brought the industry up to date on a major trend impacting the future of the nuclear fuel market: Utilities (mainly Asian utilities) investing directly in uranium producing properties to secure future supplies.
After reviewing a parallel practice engaged in by U.S. nuclear utilities in the 1970s and 1980s, investments that generally faired poorly, Mr. Faul explained why the current trend is likely to better meet the requirements of nuclear’s rising stars. With respect to market impact, Mr. Faul pointed out that utility ownership of mining assets means that a large share of incremental production will not be moving through market channels, and an equivalent share of incremental demand will also be satisfied below the market’s radar.
