Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinate, Uzbekistan

NUKEM has enjoyed excellent cooperation with the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinate in the Republic of Uzbekistan since 1992.

The Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinate (NMMC) was founded in 1958 for the mining and processing of uranium ore, and quickly became a crucial production center within the USSR’s Ministry of Middle Machine Building (the predecessor to Minatom and now Rosatom). NMMC is now one of the largest and most important industrial enterprises in the Republic of Uzbekistan, with production focused on uranium, gold and construction materials. The Navoi Combinate utilizes the most efficient, environmentally-friendly in-situ leach uranium mining technology.

In the course of their 14 years of close cooperation, NUKEM and NMMC have introduced uranium from Uzbekistan to the world market, and have established NMMC’s reputation as a reliable supplier through excellent performance under more than 15 long-term contracts with utility customers in over 10 countries worldwide. Continuous production financing by NUKEM has enabled NMMC to increase and stabilize uranium output at approximately 6 million pounds U3O8 annually.

NUKEM and NMMC have successfully fought to eliminate trade barriers to the sale of Uzbek uranium in the United States and Europe, and have cooperated on the formation of the American-Uzbekistan Chamber of Commerce – a non-profit organization established to promote commercial and cultural ties between the U.S. and Uzbekistan.
